About the Programme
Impilo Academy, the training arm of Impilo (a leading child-protection organisation with more than two decades of frontline experience) and Drilldown Reports, has created this programme specifically for South African banking teams.
It equips every level of bank employee, from frontline tellers and call-centre agents to team leaders, HR practitioners and executives, with practical, ready-to-use skills to:
- Recognise the early signs of gender-based violence, bullying and coercive control
- Intervene safely and proportionately as a skilled upstander
- Respond with care and confidence when a colleague discloses
- Build genuine psychological safety and protective team norms
Every module is grounded in proven psychological methods (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and mindfulness) and shaped by real South African banking realities. The content is trauma-informed, culturally respectful and designed so you can apply it the very next day at work and take the same skills home to strengthen your family and community.
Why This Programme Matters
South African banking workplaces sit at the intersection of high pressure, high trust and high visibility. When GBV, bullying or coercive control goes unaddressed, the cost is felt in three places at once:
- Colleagues lose focus, confidence and psychological safety
- Teams lose performance, service quality and retention
- Families lose the emotional and financial stability that banks help protect
This programme turns bystanders into skilled upstanders. It gives you clear language, simple steps and the confidence to act early, without putting yourself or others at unnecessary risk. Completing it means you leave with practical tools that protect dignity at work, strengthen families at home, and contribute to safer communities across South Africa. Every learner also helps fund Impilo’s ongoing frontline work with vulnerable and abandoned children.

.
Module 1: Recognising the Dynamics – GBV, Bullying & Coercive Control in Banking Contexts
You will learn to spot both subtle and overt signs of gender-based violence, bullying and coercive control in everyday banking interactions across branches, call centres and back-office teams. This foundational skill helps you notice harm early, before it escalates, so you can protect colleagues, strengthen team performance and contribute to safer families from your very first shift.
.
Module 2: Building Psychological Safety in Banking Teams
You will discover what true psychological safety looks like in South African banking workplaces and how everyday behaviours either build or erode the trust needed for people to speak up. The value is immediate: when teams feel safe, silence decreases, performance improves, and harmful dynamics find far less room to grow.
.
Module 3: The Upstander Mindset – From Bystander to Active Supporter
You will explore why people often stay silent and learn practical mindset tools that move you from hesitation to values-based, proportionate action. This shift turns awareness into personal responsibility, equipping you to become a consistent, everyday upstander who strengthens safety for colleagues and families alike.
.
Module 4: Responding to Disclosures – Core Principles & Creating Safety (Listen & Believe)
You will master the critical first moments of a disclosure — creating immediate safety, listening with care, using belief statements, and avoiding common responses that can cause further harm. These skills protect the dignity of the person speaking and help you stay calm and present under pressure.
.
Module 5: Responding to Disclosures – Support, Refer & Follow Through
Building on the first response, you will learn how to offer ongoing support without overstepping, make warm and appropriate referrals, conduct sensitive follow-up conversations, and protect your own wellbeing as a supporter. This completes the cycle of responsible care that strengthens both workplace trust and personal resilience.
.
Module 6: Practical Tools for Addressing Bullying & Low-Level Harassment
You will gain clear, ready-to-use tools — including the 5 D’s Framework and “I Noticed” language — to address bullying and low-level harassment safely and effectively. Early, low-drama intervention prevents escalation, protects team climate, and models the respectful behaviour that benefits everyone.
.
Module 7: Leadership in Action – Manager & Team Leader Responsibilities
Managers and team leaders will develop the practical skills and confidence to fulfil their duty of care: responding to disclosures, addressing harmful behaviour, setting and enforcing norms, and modelling the supportive culture the whole team needs. Strong leadership multiplies the impact of every individual upstander action.
.
Module 8: Real Banking Scenarios – Branch, Contact Centre & Hybrid Environments
You will practise applying all previous skills in realistic, high-pressure banking contexts, branches, contact centres, back-office teams and hybrid meetings. Context-specific confidence means you can act effectively in the fast-paced realities of daily banking work without hesitation.
.
Module 9: When Work Affects Home – Family Stressors, Youth Vulnerability & Role-Modelling
You will explore how workplace dynamics spill into family life, recognise signs that colleagues may be under home-related pressure, and understand how your own behaviour influences the young people around you. This module connects safer workplaces directly to stronger families and the interruption of intergenerational harm.
Module 10: Creating Team Norms & Collective Accountability
You will learn practical ways to establish, maintain and strengthen shared team norms that keep psychological safety and respectful behaviour alive every day. Moving from individual action to collective responsibility embeds lasting culture change across the whole team.
.
Module 11: Protecting Yourself & Your Colleagues – Self-Care, Boundaries & Vicarious Resilience
You will gain tools to recognise the emotional impact of supporting others, set healthy boundaries, use quick grounding techniques, and build sustainable self-care habits. Looking after yourself ensures you can remain an effective, long-term upstander without burnout.
.
Module 12: Sustaining Safer Workplaces – Personal Commitment & Team Rituals
In this final module you will turn everything you have learned into lasting personal commitments and simple team rituals that keep safety, respect and upstander behaviour visible day after day. Sustainable habits create the enduring change that protects colleagues, strengthens families and builds the banking culture we all want to work in.
.
Quiz
Test your understanding and lock in the skills you have built across the full programme.
These short, practical quizzes help you check how well you can recognise harmful dynamics, respond supportively, apply the 5 D’s, and sustain safer team cultures. Each quiz reinforces the key learning from the modules so the tools stay clear and usable long after you finish watching the videos and reading the manuals.
Completing the quizzes gives you immediate feedback, builds confidence in your ability to act as a skilled upstander, and shows that the knowledge has moved from theory into practical readiness you can take into your daily banking work and home.
